Hardwood Floor Refinishing – Process Explained

Hardwood floors are one of the most beautiful features in a home. Over time, however, everyday wear, scratches, and fading can dull their appearance. At Rise Reno, our refinishing process restores your hardwood floors to their original beauty—or gives them a whole new look if you’d like a different color.

Preparation

Before we begin, we ask you to remove personal items, and our team will carefully move heavy furniture for you. Surrounding areas are protected to minimize dust and keep your home clean during the process.

Demolition & Subfloor

Old shoe mold or baseboards may be removed, and any damaged boards are identified at this stage. If there are subfloor issues, we address them before sanding begins so your new finish has a stable foundation.

Installation (If Needed)

In some refinishing projects, we may need to repair or lace in new boards, or extend flooring into an adjacent room. These repairs are blended seamlessly so the refinished floors have a uniform look.

Sanding & Finishing

This is where the true transformation takes place. We carefully sand the floors in multiple stages, beginning with coarse sanding to remove the old finish and surface damage, and moving to finer grits for a smooth, even surface. If you’d like to update the color, we apply one coat of professional-grade stain, ensuring an even tone and allowing it to fully dry. Once the floor is ready, we apply three coats of high-quality water-based polyurethane, with light sanding between each coat to ensure proper adhesion and a flawless finish. This system provides strong protection while enhancing the natural beauty of your wood. For homeowners who want maximum durability, we also offer an upgrade to a premium two-component finish system designed to stand up to the heaviest household traffic.

Completion

Once the final coat has cured, we reinstall baseboards, return your furniture, and place protective felt pads (provided by us) under each piece to help prevent scratches.

Client Closeout

We review the finished floors with you, provide care instructions, and answer any final questions. Key points include:

  • Walk on floors with socks after 24 hours.
  • Return furniture after 48–72 hours.
  • Place rugs only after 7 days to allow full curing.
  • Clean with gentle hardwood cleaners — never harsh chemicals or steam mops.
Most refinishing projects take 3–5 days, depending on the size of your home and drying times between coats.

Why Refinish Instead of Replace?

Refinishing your hardwood floors gives you the look and performance of brand-new floors without the cost of a full replacement. Whether you want to restore the natural beauty of your wood or update the color to better match your home’s style, refinishing is a smart investment that adds lasting value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does hardwood floor refinishing take?

Most refinishing projects take 3–5 days, depending on the size of your home and drying times between coats.

When can I walk on my floors again?

You can walk on the floors in socks after 24 hours. Avoid shoes or heavy foot traffic until the finish has had more time to cure.

When can I move furniture back?
